How I Have Developed My Creative Practice in 2021

In Early 2021 I was awarded the DYCP grant to help me develop myself and the individuals I was working with. In particular I was exploring improvised electronic music using step sequenced hardware instruments and reactive visual art that responded to individual instruments.

How I Have Developed

During this period I learned to separate the wheat from the chaff, engineering special situations with choice musicians and making sure that we were all focussed and on the same page. As I did more and more post-production outside audio, I learned to choose carefully the elements I wanted in the final product, and was better able to visualise the finished result before we were even in a room together. The difference between the webcam filmed jams from early 2021 and the polished audiovisual extravaganzas I was producing by the end of the year is extraordinary, and I have the Arts Council UK to thank for granting me the means to recruit the musicians, videographers, mastering engineers, consultants, coaches and collaborators for this project, allowing me to focus solely on the space and the vision, the artists and the outcome.

I have learned where I am most valuable to these unique individuals, and have been able to craft a professionalism which directly addresses what these working musicians need to express. Somewhere between therapy, practice, performance, and extreme sports, putting these artists on the spot in unfamiliar musical situations has been transformative and informative for all concerned, and each of us has grown in new and exciting ways.

FILMED PERFORMANCES

During 2021 I worked with numerous artists from Bristol and beyond to cultivate a hub for creativity and the development of these performers careers and interests. One of the most interesting aspects of putting these individuals on the spot with an ever changing hardware setup was how well they were able to adapt to non-traditional approaches to music making and visual art, with many of those I worked alongside having transformed their careers and incorporated new styles and approaches to performance and production. From folk musicians exploring Neo-R&B to funk singers experimenting with Dub instrumentation, as a team we have merged genres and techniques from around the world, and recorded hundreds of hours of jams,

AUDIO VISUAL SHOWS

I've been using a combination of hardware and software to create generative audiovisual performances and livestream to facebook and twitch, with over 100 broadcasts in 2021. I was able to push the limits of my equipment, streaming in HD as music and visuals were created on the spot. With 3 sound cards and 7 pieces of software in my signal flow from artist to audience, the learning curve was steep and there was no shortage of flops, hiccups, and fails as I experimented with various setup.

Below is a selection of those livestreams curated into audiovisual performances.

All music and visuals were improvised live and the only editing was subtractive.

HARDWARE TUTORIALS

I've shared my journey with hardware and software with filmed tutorials explaining elements of my work flow and how I make music, the techniques I have found most useful and the challenges I've encountered.

I've explored hardware jams, filmed demonstrations, explanations, and more playful forms of teaching. Now that I have developed a better understanding of the workflow and equipment and how to share this through educational videos it is an avenue I will explore further.

Music Releases

Working with individual artists to create accessible and captivating music media from videos to single releases composed both of shorter edits of our filmed jams and post edited visual effects. This is an area I'm expanding into more as Ive worked with such high calibre musicians, and Ive been able to really hone my vision of a finished product and engage with collaborators with a new level of professionalism and expertise.

TIMELINE

Started testing the livestream software and the capabilities of my setup with audiovisual performances. I sought mentors and teachers who could help me refine my practice and arranged time to work with them in the months ahead

Created a series of 30 'Glimpses' videos showcasing some of the recordings from our livestreams. These allowed me to test various editing techniques, conceptualise video structure, and refine my upload strategies.

Explored new ways to create truly interactive audiovisual art that could be live streamed at a reasonable quality, pushing the limits of the technology available to me.

After absorbing all I can from mentors and teachers Ive worked with, I refine the hardware and software setup for live performance, using everything I've learned to cultivate a focussed core of musicians always ready to deliver, whilst sharing my knowledge through teaching and educational videos and hosting regular sessions for musicians to explore their art in new ways and take creative risks.

We film our final jams in this studio space alongside editing the videos and performing to audiences online, in the studio, and across Bristol. Videos are uploaded and we finalise release strategies with all the artists involved.

Began integrating musicians into the performances. Began filming hardware demos and demonstrations to show how I use them in my set.

Began Livestreaming with other musicians in earnest on twitch and recording some of the output. I encountered a lot of issues and made mistakes, but the frequency of Broadcast allowed me to refine the process.

Had gathered a core of musicians best suited to the project and am regularly filming and editing with a team of people and clear goals. The finished product is looking better than ever

I'm now performing in bristol with new skills and techniques pushing the boundaries of contemprary music performance and production and have a dedicated core of musicians ready to contribute to the project. We regulary film live performances for post production and my output is looking more polished and professional than ever, without having lost what I consider to be the authenticity of the performances.

Patreon launched to give the public access to work before its officially released, and final performances and livestreams in this studio space as we launch our online campaign to spread awareness for future projects and artists.

WHAT NEXT?

I'll be releasing music and videos recorded throughout the year and performing in Bristol and beyond as we take this show to the stage. Expect more tutorials and live jams too, and more of our filmed jams from this remarkable year as they are cleared for release with artists involved.

I'll be moving out of this incredible studio and into a new space for 2022, which will be a moment for me to hit pause on the recordings and continue developing my online presence to raise awareness for gigs, releases, the artists involved and future projects. Its going to be a big change!

ARTIST ACCELERATOR

I'm building an 'Artist Accelerator' in the heart of Bristol, giving artists a platform to create, collaborate, and perform at the highest level and showcasing their best work as NFTs, music videos and live-streamed performances.

I have found the space, and am now seeking funding to develop this opportunity to help artists reach their highest creative potential.

My goal is to create a space where artists are able to find that same spark of daring creativity and authentic expression, and bring to life their art form across multiple platforms and styles.

With our unique style of recording, curating, editing and performing together I know the people I work with will be able to present the spirit of skilful creative play in ways never before seen by the public or uninitiated.
